With the Evolution series, Behrens conceptually and sculpturally deals with the creative power of nature, formulating questions about its limitations and finitude. “We emerge from nature and we end up in it. I make myself aware of this cycle,” Behrens says. He seems to be taking his previous formal language down a new path, a consequence of years of sculptural activity. The outer forms are based on stylized rings whose cross-sections themselves take on different geometries and whose surfaces are partially broken up by ground-in structures and expressive reliefs. Emphasizing the outer and inner forms in this way, dynamics and balance are united in the sculpture, creating an interplay marked by tension between symbolized infinity and explosive rebellion.
